Clear Braces for Teens: The Pros and Cons of Ceramic Braces

Clear Braces for Teens: The Pros and Cons of Ceramic Braces

Clear ceramic braces are a common alternative to traditional metal braces. However, before you decide to go with ceramic braces you should consider these important factors.

What’s the difference between ceramic braces, metal braces and clear aligners?

Braces are used by an orthodontist to help realign and straighten your teeth. Many teens prefer clear braces instead of traditional metal braces because they are less noticeable.

Traditional metal braces have metal brackets and are very noticeable when you smile, laugh, or talk. Ceramic braces have brackets made of ceramic or porcelain, or in some cases plastic, and are less noticeable because they blend in with your natural teeth.

Clear braces are a type of ceramic braces that uses brackets and wires to move the teeth into their new position. Clear ceramic braces are different from Invisalign Teen Clear Aligners which are transparent, removable, custom-made orthodontic devices.

Important factors to consider when choosing clear ceramic or metal braces

Durability

Metal braces are known for their durability. Ceramic braces are durable, however they can chip or crack if you play sports or engage in activities that could impact on your jaw or mouth. These repairs can be costly.

Sensitivity

The ceramic material can mildly irritate their inner lips due to the fact that ceramic brackets are bigger than traditional metal brackets.  The difference is hardly noticeable, but worth keeping in mind if you have a sensitive mouth.

Cost

Traditional metal braces are the most affordable option for orthodontic treatment. Ceramic braces are a bit more expensive and some insurance plans might not cover the additional cost, therefore it is best to check with your insurance provider beforehand.

Diet

With both metal and clear ceramic braces, patients should avoid eating foods that can push the metal out of place and cause damage to the wire or brackets.  These foods include, but are not limited to, candy, caramel, apples, and popcorn.

Additionally, with clear ceramic braces, certain foods and drinks (such as coffee, tea, soda and tomato sauce) can stain and dis-colour the clear brackets.

Oral Care

When wearing traditional metal or clear ceramic braces food and plaque can easily get stuck on the the wires and brackets. Therefore, it is important to remain diligent with your daily oral care and to floss after meals to keep your mouth clean.
